Your résumé is one of the key factors in the process of getting the job of your dreams. Its purpose is not to actually get you that job, but to make the employer want to interview you. I’m going to explain why you should write it yourself.

Most people hate writing résumés, I sympathize; it’s not my favourite activity either! But it’s important; so important that I’ve written an e-book about it. I did this because I’d worked with so many people who had no idea how to create a résumé (or CV as they are called here in the UK), let alone the covering letter which must always go with it.

A lot of people turn to the CV or résumé writing services which are springing up all over the place. If you choose wisely, you’ll find someone who knows what they are doing. So why am I telling you that you should write your own?

It’s quite simple – professionals know about résumé writing, but they don’t know you, or the job you’re applying for. There are some experts who will interview you and look at your plans as part of the package – but personal consultations don’t come cheap!

Did you know that most employers will look at your résumé for 20 seconds before deciding if it goes through to the next round or in the bin? Sounds a bit like American Idol or X Factor, doesn’t it? And yes, some very talented people will slip through the net if they don’t get their act together and produce a good résumé. If your CV doesn’t stand out, you have no hope of getting to the interview stage, and no interview means no job, no matter how well-qualified or experienced you might be.

The employer is looking for the one person who is most suited to the post. And that’s what your résumé is about – you and your ability to do one specific job. So not only should your résumé be written by the person who knows you best – you, it should also be customized for every job you apply for. Sounds like a lot of work? But think about it, you will probably work for 35-40 hours a week for at least 40 years of your life, with only a few weeks off each year for holidays. Yet most people spend more time planning those holidays than they do planning their career!
