Job and Lifestyle

Does your job fit your lifestyle? Or should it be the other way around, with your lifestyle fitting your job?

Ideally the two should go together, but how realistic is that? If you want a big house, expensive holidays and the freedom to buy what you want when you want, you aren’t likely to be able to do that on a nurse’s salary or that of a teacher.

Are You Passionate About Your Career?

How important is it to be passionate about your career? I’ve been watching Masterchef on TV, a competition in which a bunch of amateur chefs get a shot at becoming professional.

It’s a gruelling competition, in which contestants are put through all sorts of tests, including cooking in a busy restaurant at lunchtime and producing a two course meal for food critics.  The final is next Monday and looks like an obstacle course!

The thing which keeps them all going in the face of culinary disasters and the judges’ criticism is passion, passion for food and passion for cooking.

Dare to Be Different

Would you dare to be different? Perhaps you are considering a career change, but haven’t decided exactly what you want to do. Have you ever though about doing something entirely different?

You don’t necessarily have to opt for a completely different lifestyle, just take a little time out to follow a different path, possibly doing something you always wanted to do, but never had the chance. Six months or a year off won’t necessarily be too disruptive in terms of your career. So why not take an adult gap year, to get out there and experience something new. Think about taking a sabbatical, even if it’s unusual or unheard of in your line of work. Decide what you’d like to do and then ask if you can have the time off. You might be surprised and get the go-ahead. And of course you might not, but you won’t know for sure unless you ask.

Stuck in a Rut?

Are you considering a career change but find that fears get in the way and keep you stuck in a rut? Taking the action you need to get out of it feels just too much like hard work. And even though your current post isn’t the most exciting job on the planet, at least it’s very familiar, and that keeps you feeling safe, at least some of the time.

So how can you push yourself out of your own comfort zone? First of all you have to recognize it for what it is. Take a look at the jobs you could do standing on your head. No fears there, you can coast along on autopilot.

Then think of the more challenging things you could be doing and would actually like to do, either in your present employment or in a new career.

Why aren’t you prepared to make the shift? The situation you find so comfortable right now could feel like a trap if you find yourself still there in a few years’ time.

You know there is more to life and more to work than your current experience? So what is it that’s holding you back?

For most people the answer will be fear - it could be fear of failure or perhaps of moving to another job and getting it wrong. Whatever happens, you don’t want to end up in a worse place. Or is it that you don’t feel confident? What might happen if you did something new and weren’t any good at it?

Whatever your reason for being stuck in a rut, you do want things to change. It’s human nature to want to grow, take up new challenges and have new, interesting and exciting experiences.

Accept that you have fears - everyone does - and don’t try to deal with them all at once. Career change is complicated. It will take a while to work out what you really want and then you’ll have to work out how to get there. If you’d like some help to kickstart your efforts click here to download my free ebook.

Video - How to Get a Job

Hi Folks,

This weekend I finally managed to make my first video using Camtasia. (don’t think I’ll be winning any awards :) ) However, it is now online and gives you a “rough guide” or tour of the Jobseekers’ Success Kit and I’ve also included a few tips on resume writing, interview technique and how to find a job.  As my video-making skills improve, I’m sure I’ll come up with a much improved version :)

Here’s the link Video Tour
