Keeping Up with Career Trends

Fear of Change

Posted on | April 5, 2008 | No Comments

So, why are we afraid of making a career change? The first step towards getting beyond your fears is to be clear about what they are. Fear of change is very common, but it’s a broad term which covers a long list of possibilities.

Don’t beat yourself up if you seem to be sabotaging yourself in terms of career. Accept that most people are afraid to make career changes, which are, after all, life changing.

One of the biggest fears is fear of failure. What if you screw up? At least now you have a job, you have a steady income and some sort of career-related identity, but if you give that up and don’t make a success of your next venture, who will you be and how will your survive?

The important thing is to do some research into training and careers which interest you. Look at the skills you’ll need and the ones you’ve already got. Consider what you enjoy doing and all the things you’ve always wanted to do.

Look at the type of careers which would enable you to do these things. Do they need a lot of training or further study? Are you prepared to do that? Check out how you could gain new qualifications whilst still working – online education creates ways of studying which can be fitted in around a busy routine.

Then find some people who are already doing what you want to do. You can read about them in biographies, newspaper articles and books describing careers. Or you can search for information online. If you can actually find someone to talk to, so much the better. Ask your friends and family if they know anyone working in the fields which interest you.

Fear of change is often based on fear of the unknown. So get to know the career you’d like to move to and at least some of the fear should go.
