Making a career change in you middle years has become a growing trend these days. And with so many folk living so much longer, pension funds are unable to meet the increased payouts needed for longer periods of retirement. This means that plenty of people will need to search for an alternative method in which to meet the costs of their retirement . And considering your present-day company is not likely to be prepared to keep your job open right up until you will be 75 or 80 years of age, you could find yourself confronted by the need to find a different opportunity as you reach midlife.

Step #1 Try to find Work In which Maturity is Highly Regarded

Should you be consiering making a midlife change of profession, it is important to look out for jobs where your experience is going to be valued. We still live in a culture where youth is held up as the ideal .And this is a dilemma for older folks who are considering changing profession. The good news is, there are now bosses who do understand the value you bring with your experience.. Moreover, you will find certain areas where age coupled with know-how may very well be considered an asset.

Very often, these jobs are in areas in which you work directly with people and specifically in helping careers, where the patience and awareness which come with experience are crucial..One particular area where this is commonly the case is homelessness.Men and women who end up becoming homeless usually reach crisis point due to some complex challenges, for example , having been fired and accumulating debt, which then leads to family meltdown.

Caring for older people people is usually another suitable area for older jobseekers. Nursing is one job which will does accepts experienced students.

Step #2 Think About Working as a Consultant

If you are experiencing dilemma uncovering an workplace to offer you a full time job opportunity, Ponder changing to a consultant. If you have had a robust experience in business or any other field of operation that may be popular, it is easy to construct as a advisor And receive elevated charges. This could give you scope for work part time but nevertheless generate the equivalent of a full time revenue.

Step #3 Think About A Supplementary Income Stream

No job is going to be safe and also you may not want to stay in a full time job once you hit 60 or 65.. But since you will need to continue supporting yourself, you still need to be earning money.

If you take steps to produce a second earnings when you are in your 40s or 50s, it ought to be sufficiently organised as soon as you reach 60 or 70, which should allow you to slow down a bit and enjoy yourself.

If you are considering a career change, don't assume that it isn't possible just because you don't have the qualifications. there are many ways in which you can make a career change and doing your research will help you find the best one for you.

Are you currently dissatisfied with your job or the direction of your career? If you are, you may be interested in changing career fields. While career change is more than possible, it is important to remember is that jobs and career fields can vary enormously. For example, just because you may make a great legal security, it doesn’t necessarily mean that you are qualified to work as a nurse or another healthcare professional.

However, this works the other way too! Just because you don’t have any experience in something or think you wouldn’t be any good at it doesn’t mean it’s true.

That is why it is important that you do not make any of the typical career change assumptions. Assuming is the worst mistake that you could ever make, especially with something as important as your career.

Before officially deciding to change careers, you will want to take the time to thoroughly research each career field that you may be interested in entering. This research can easily be done online or at your local library. Important points that you will want to examine include current and forecasted job outlook, as well as pay.

Once you have at least one or two career fields that you would be interested in entering, you may want to start searching for open job positions. Don’t apply for any of those jobs just yet. Instead, you will want to examine a number of different factors. One of those factors is pay. For the positions that you would be interested in apply for is the pay enough to support your family? While some circumstances may allow you to take a pay cut, you may want to avoid this if you can.

Job requirements, as outlined in the job description and accompanying paperwork are the next thing to look at. These may include education, training, or previous work experience. You will find that most job listings, both in print and online, will outline all of the requirements needed for the job. This will give you a good idea as to whether or not you are qualified for the job or jobs of your dreams. This information can help you to decided if you want to take the time to take a few night or weekend training courses to help improve your training and experience.

Training courses come in a number of different formats, but they are all designed to help you prepare for a career change. For example, hopeful accountants may learn how to prepare taxes, keep accurate business records, and so forth. The length of training required will all depend on the career field and the level you hope to reach within that career.

Your local community colleges or vocational centerswill e able to help you find the right courses and assess how you can fit training in to your lifestyle. Thre are plenty of options for online training and part-time training. So it is possible to continue working in your present job while getting qualifications for your new career.

So, don’t assume you can’t do something just because you need qualifications. Do your research and find a way to make your desired career change happen.

Thinking about a midlife career change? The first step is to assess your current situation to figure out your skills, experience and what you want you want to do next.

If you are contemplating career change over 40, you need to make a detailed assessment of your present situation. This will help you decide what you do and don’t want in your new career, as well as determining any training you might need.

Your Present Job

You probably know what you don’t like about your present job. The following questions will help you see what you do like in your current job or what you liked about previous jobs.

Which jobs have you had and how much experience in each?
Which skills did you learn in those jobs?
Which aspects of each of your jobs did you most enjoy and why?
Which skills do you want to continue using in your new career?

Transferable Skills

Many of the transferable skills you have picked up in other areas of your life will also be useful in the workplace. In order to determine the transferable skills you have developed outside your job, here are a few questions for you to answer:

What experience have you had outside work?

Examples might be bringing up a family, coaching a sports team, volunteering, fundraising, creating websites or databases, or making Christmas gifts and decorations. Look at any hobbies and interests you have had for some time and in which you have become proficient.

Which skills have you used as part of those experiences?

What Do You Want?

Next, you need to think about what you want from your new career, starting with broad concepts and then narrowing them down to specifics. What do you dream about ?

Do you want to work with people, animals, things or facts? Or would you prefer a combination of these? Then get into the details, for example if you want to work with animals, what type of animals and in what capacity? Do you want to be a zookeeper, working with reptiles or do you want to groom dogs?

Where would you ideally like to work?

This can include the general location – city or countryside, indoors or outdoors, home or abroad – and more specific location such as in an office, a hospital, a school or at home?

Are there new skills you would like to learn? What are they?

Can You Afford Retraining?

Many careers will involve an element of retraining, which can mean anything from a short course to a fulltime degree course. So you should also look at how you would finance retraining and also how you would cope with having to study again.

Fitting A Career Change into Your Life

Career change requires a big shake up in your life and so you need to consider how it will fit in with your current lifestyle. If you need to go back to school you will have to think about how this will fit around your current commitment. And you need to talk to other people in your household to see how they feel about it and how it will affect them

You also need to think about the amount of time it will take to get yourself established in a new career. This could cause financial problems and you will need to look at ways in which those can be resolved.

There is a lot to think about when you want a mid life career change, but if you do a detailed assessment of your current situation , this will help you to find solutions to potential problems before they arise.

If you want to change career, it is difficult at any age, let alone when you are in your forties or fifties or even older. But this doesn’t mean you shouldn’t try! People are living longer these days and they are also having to work longer than their parents or grandparents.

With so few good pension schemes, not many people can afford to retire at sixty or sixty five. And if you live to be one hundred, which is no longer rare, you will probably expect to work at least in some capacity until you are eighty – unless you have a few million stashed away.
On the positive side, this doesn’t mean staying in your present job until you are eighty! Despite age discrimination laws, it’s unlikely that your boss will keep you around that long and even more unlikely that you’ll want to stay!

So deciding to make a career change at 40+ is a good move, but it may not be easy to implement. And you may feel that you have no idea which direction your new career should take.
Let’s take a look at some of the positives. You already have a good twenty or more years of solid work experience. This will not only have given you some very good skills, but will also have a pretty clear idea of your strengths and what you enjoy doing – as well as what you don’t.

One of the best ways in which to change career when you are older, is to build on what you have already got and to take the best aspects of your experience, both at work and in the rest of your life, and turn those into new income streams. This can be done gradually and will also enable you to have a very flexible working life. This means you will be in control. You may want to work full time for the next ten years and then cut down to 75% of your current workload and later to 50%. Being in control of your own career gives you this freedom.

To gain complete freedom from employers you will have to work towards becoming self-employed and you can do this slowly, experimenting with different possibilities while still within the relative security of your present job.
